Francis "Bud" Hawley Armstrong of Arlington, VA, a member of our greatest generation, lost his battle with Parkinson Disease and went to be with his Lord on Sunday, March 16, 2014 according to his nephew and companions Pepper and James "Jim" Kincheloe. Armstrong was born November 5, 1924 in Harrisburg, PA to Bertha and S. Hawley Armstrong. After graduating from Penn State, State College, PA, he was involved in a management program that brought him to DC over 60 years ago. He was drafted in the U.S. Army during WWII. After his discharge, he managed warehouses for National Airlines and Pan Am Airlines. He retired as store manager for State of Virginia. Armstrong learned the value of hard work from his grandfather Allan Plank – Plank Brewery. He was an award winning plant grower, sailor, swimmer, fisherman, and track and field runner. Armstrong loved music big bands to include swing, jazz, and disco. A true beach bum, he built a travel trailer (RV) and traveled the east coast. Armstrong was a cradle Episcopalian deeply rooted in his faith. A memorial service will be held on Saturday April 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Church of St. Clement, 1701 N. Quaker Lane, Alexandria, VA 22302. Burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Expression of sympathy may be made to Church of St. Clement.
