John Daniel (Jack) Garrett died on May 11, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Jack was a resident at Greenspring Village in Springfield, Virginia, and is survived by his wife of 71 years, Bettie, and his 3 children: Patricia Garrett (Oliver Woshinsky), Katherine Ball (George) and Thomas Garrett (Shari). Jack was born in Columbus, Georgia, on June 10, 1922, to Mary Daniels and Delma Garrett. He moved frequently growing up but graduated from Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C., and raised his family in the Washington area. He worked at the Army Map Service/Defense Mapping Agency for 43 years and retired in 1983. While working, he attended night classes for many years and ultimately earned a BA from George Mason University. He was a devoted husband and family man and was extremely proud of his extended family of 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Everly Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd, Alexandria, VA. A Funeral Service will be held at the Village Chapel at Greenspring Village on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 11 a.m. Interment will be private.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jack's name to Greenspring Hospice, 7410 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, VA 22150, or a charity of your choice.

I just adore this man. I volunteered with him on Tuesdays at Treasure Trove 3 and he taught me so much. He always had wonderful anecdotes and kept everyone smiling. I will surely miss him. It was always such a treat to see photos of his lovely family and hear what they wer all up to.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. Mr. Garrett always had a smile on his face, and an obvious love for his family. Our condolences are with Mrs. Garrett and family.
